How it is calculated

Banks compound FD interest every quarter. For a tenure that is not a whole number of quarters, the leftover days earn simple interest.

That is why two calculators can differ by a few rupees: this one counts whole calendar quarters, like a bank statement.

Maturity = P × (1 + r/400)^q × (1 + r × d ÷ 36500)
P = deposit, r = annual rate %, q = whole quarters, d = leftover days
Example. ₹1,00,000 at 7.1% for 12 months matures at ₹1,07,291 — ₹7,291 of interest, an effective 7.3% a year. At 6% inflation the real return is only about 1.2% a year, before tax.

Questions

Is FD interest compounded quarterly?

For most Indian banks, yes — for cumulative (reinvestment) FDs. Payout FDs pay the interest out instead of compounding it.

Does an FD beat inflation?

Often only just. A 7.1% FD yields about 7.3% a year with quarterly compounding; at 6% inflation that is about 1.2% of real growth, and after tax on the interest it can be below zero. The calculator shows the real return for your rate.

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, at your income-tax slab. The bank deducts TDS above the yearly threshold. This calculator shows interest before tax.

Why is my bank’s figure slightly different?

Banks differ in how they count days and round. This calculator uses whole quarters plus simple interest for the remaining days, which matches most bank statements to the rupee.
